Facebook and doctors: Take two aspirin and 'friend' me in the morning? Study advises 'careful reflection'

Should doctors be Facebook "friends" with their patients? Increasingly, professionals are stroking their beards and mulling the ethical ramifications (not to say potential for awkwardness) of such relationships. Goodbye to posting "Man, I tied one on last night" the morning of the day you're due to operate on someone. Farewell to blowing off steam about old Mr. XX, whose endless digestive issues drive you nuts: Loose words like that could come back to bite you even worse than accepting a "friend" request from some ex from those long-ago days when you were young and foolish. To find out how many doctors use the accounts, as well as their thoughts on this issue, French researchers surveyed 405 residents and fellows at Rouen University Hospital. Of the 202 respondents: Seventy-three percent had a Facebook profile, the vast majority with their own names, photos and birthdates, etc., and a lot of them with their current place of employment also noted;

Everything’s connected: Why all marketing will become social

We all know the Facebook story or at least saw the movie. A site for college kids to publish their pictures became an Internet phenomenon. But while grandma may now be posting what she ate for breakfast, the real revolution Facebook has created is for advertisers. Brands are salivating at the prospect of reaching the 500 million users who collectively spend over 700 billion minutes a month on Facebook. In 2011 and beyond, Facebook will become one of the most important marketing channels in the world. Already, Facebook is on track to generate more than $2 billion in ad revenues in 2010, far surpassing earlier estimates of around $1 billion, and will likely skyrocket past that figure in 2011, as more marketers shift budgets from TV, radio, and print to the social realm. Proctor & Gamble got a head start on this move by recently announcing it would transfer the majority of its daytime TV advertising budget to social platforms like Facebook and Twitter. And, it’s not jus

Winklevoss twins on Facebook lawsuit: It’s not about the money

Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, the twins who (along with their business partner Divya Narendra) accuse Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg of stealing their idea, got a big write-up in The New York Times for their ongoing legal dispute with Facebook. We’ve covered this case a number of times before. The twins settled with Facebook in 2008 for $20 million in cash and $45 million in Facebook shares, but tried to back out of the deal almost immediately when unflattering instant messages from Zuckerberg came to light. They moved forward with an appeal earlier this year, arguing that their shares might be worth much less than Facebook claimed, according to a valuation made at the time. (VentureBeat’s Owen Thomas argued that Facebook is “playing a dangerous game” by claiming that it had no obligation to disclose the lower valuation.) So what’s new in the Times story? The legal details are pretty much the same, but Times reporter Miguel Heft interviewed the twins and offers a better sense of

Facebook tops Google in website hits: study

Facebook stole the thunder from Google this year as the most-visited website in the United States, according to a new study from Internet research firm Experian Hitwise. The social-networking juggernaut's www.facebook.com was the top-visited website for the first time and accounted for 8.93 percent of all US visits between January and November 2010, Experian Hitwise said. Google, the world's Internet search leader, slid to second place. Google.com drew 7.19 percent of visits, followed by Yahoo! Mail (3.52 percent), Yahoo! (3.30 percent) and YouTube (2.65 percent). Advertisement: Story continues below Facebook led arch-rival Google in the number of hits per month since March. However, taking into account all of Google's websites, such as YouTube and Gmail, the Mountain View, California-based company drew 9.85 percent of the US visits, ahead of Facebook's 8.93 percent and the 8.12 percent garnered by Yahoo! sites, an Experian Hitwise spokesman said Friday. Twins’ Facebook Fight Rages On(Part 2)

While the Winklevosses could end up losing their settlement, the risks for Facebook are high as well. If the court unwinds the agreement, the company will have to decide whether to offer them a richer settlement or face a trial. Recent trades on a private exchange suggest that Facebook, which is not a public company, now is worth around $50 billion, and the company may not want the negative publicity associated with a trial, especially if it decides to move forward with a stock offering. Twins’ Facebook Fight Rages On

SAN DIEGO — Some people go to court hoping to win millions of dollars. Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss have already won tens of millions. But six years into a legal feud with Facebook, they want to give it back — for a chance to get more. Enlarge This Image Fred R. They sued Facebook and Mr. Zuckerberg in 2004, and settled four years later for $20 million in cash and $45 mi

Canadians Are Online Longer Than Any Other Country

Canadians spend more time online than users in any other country, and and while they’re surfing the web, many visit Facebook. ComScore numbers show about 68 percent of the Canadian population is online, compared to 62 percent in France and the U.K., 60 percent in Germany, 59 percent in the U.S. and 57 percent in Japan. Canadians were some of the early users of Faceboook, according to The Globe and Mail, and at one point trailed just behind the U.S. in overall numbers of users. Facebook had been the most trafficked site in all of Canada in 2007 according to Alexa, although though there was speculation that something might have been wrong with Alexa’s tracking numbers. But according to Socialbakers.com, Canada is no longer dominating Facebook. The country has more than 17 million users on the site and is coming in 9th to 10th place, either in front of or behind India. More impressive and relevant: 51.2 percent of Canada’s total population, or 65.9 percent of the country’s online po

Facebook Fakes Become Misdemeanors Starting 2011

Pretending to be someone else on Facebook, or anywhere else online, becomes a crime in California as of this Saturday. The law specifically prohibits impersonating anyone online with the objective of harming, intimidating, threatening or defrauding. Such acts become misdemeanors punishable by a fine up up to $1000 and a year in jail. The author of the law, California Democratic state Senator Joe Simitian, represents the part of the state where Facebook has its headquarters. An article in the San Jose Mercury News quoted him saying: As a Silicon Valley legislator, I’m nothing but enthusiastic about technology. But the question is, is the technology used wisely and appropriately? This is one area where some constraint appeared necessary… The goal here really is to try to change behavior… This new law draws on the same framework used in California’s ban on forging documents. An early draft of the legislation had upset free speech advocates who worried that that the measure would stif

Older Facebook Apps May Still Have Unfettered Access to Your Data

If you're an avid reader of Switched, it's probably not news to you that Facebook apps are to be eyed with suspicion and carefully managed. What you may not know, however, is that even seemingly trustworthy but older applications might need to be booted from your profile. Before Facebook's massive privacy overhauls, many apps were simply granted free access to your data. Older versions of apps from YouTube, Digg and Delicious -- along with all of those apps that let you send hugs, cupcakes and other virtual paraphernalia -- often required that you give them unfettered access to your profile information, including relationship status, photos and friend lists. Clearly, these apps don't need that information to serve their purposes. We've covered how to check your privacy settings before, but it bears repeating here. Click on "privacy settings" under the "account" menu. Toward the bottom of the page, you'll see a link for 'Apps and Website

Facebook 101: 25 Tips and Tricks

Chances are, if you're not on Facebook already, then you're likely to be getting on it pretty soon. Whether it's your kids or your next door neighbor (or those old friends you just reunited with at your high school reunion), folks around you have been hounding you to sign up, set up a profile, and start "social-networking" with all your friends, and their friends, and so on. Truth is, social-networking sites such as Facebook (and MySpace, Bebo, LinkedIn, etc) are increasingly turning into the first place people go when they get on the Internet, as these services offer e-mail, chat, music players, photo sharing, and so much more beyond just staying in touch with your Friends. But the best (or worst) part about Facebook is all the people from your past who come out of the woodwork (we're talking grade-school past). All this means you'll want to look your very best on your Facebook profile, and make the best use of all that the service has to offer, which i

Career - Test Your Negotiation Skills

Negotiation is part of every professional's life. To negotiate, means to arrive at an understanding with another person, so that both of you are satisfied with the results. Do you know what is your skill in negotiation? If not, why not test and find out because most of our interactions demand negotiation. You are negotiating with your love partner about which place to go for dinner. You negotiate with your co-workers about how to divide the work. You negotiate with your clients about prices and you negotiate with your boss about your paycheck. Let us discuss important test factors of a negotiation. Understanding Need - If you are a good negotiator, you would begin with understanding the need of the opposite party. Only after you get that understanding will you proceed further. The first requirement is to find out what the other person wants. If you are arguing with your spouse about which restaurant to go for dinner, find out his/her need. Do they want to have dinner outside or t

The Woeful Inadequacies of Traditional Estate Planning: The Four Critical Questions You Need To Ask Yourself

When I mention the words, estate planning, most people think of meeting with an attorney and drafting legal documents. Traditionally, those documents include a will, durable power of attorney, health care proxy and perhaps a trust. After you draft these documents, you meet to sign them, then you put them somewhere "safe," cut a check to the attorney and breathe a sigh of relief because you finally have things covered. All is well and your estate is perfectly in order, right? WRONG! Too often the drafting of legal documents is confused with developing an estate plan. Sure, legal documents are part of an estate plan, but they are not "the" estate plan. You need to make sure that you have everything in one spot. If not, you could cause yourself some real problems. That's why 98% of all estate plans fall short. That's why you have debacles like the Terry Schiavo case and the Ted Williams dispute. In order to make sure that these sort of things don't happen

The Center Of The Google Vs Facebook War: The Like Button

By now it has become well known that Google is planning a competitor to Facebook. While many believe that it may be too little too late for Google, the reality is that it’s a matter of survival for the company at this point. Google’s automated algorithms have become inefficient in that their systems are somewhat easy to game and despite Marissa Mayer once claiming that search is 90 percent solved, the reality is that it isn’t anywhere close. Every day I perform searches on Google which simply fail. For me, searching has become a rapid process of trial an error. Enter the Like button, the social solution to search, and the replacement of the link as a voting mechanism. The people as a whole are more effective at determining what content is relevant and most of those people are unfortunately not effective at creating links. Case in point: there were 126 million blogs as of 2009 (easy to create sites where creating links is easy) and there are now over 500 million Facebook users activel

New Trick to View Hidden Facebook Photos and Tabs

The code came from my own experiments on accessing the hidden photos. It worked quite manually, retrieving data from a particular Facebook interface and stuffing it into the current page. I figured a more elegant solution could be found by re-using the code already embedded in the page, but I had not been able to sort out all of the built-in functions. Last night and this morning, I found what I’d been missing before, and I now present a far simpler version that gives full access to all available albums of a given user. Simply bookmark this link (right-click and choose to add a bookmark) and click the bookmark when viewing someone’s profile on Facebook. Once again, please note that this does not in any way circumvent a user’s privacy settings. If you mark your albums as visible only to your friends, this trick will not override that setting. I do not currently know of a way to access private photo albums, and if I did find one, I would report it to Facebook. My purpose in posting th

Free Gadgets for Christmas

A few years ago I discovered how to get my family and friends (and myself) all the presents we could handle, at any time of the year, for free. That’s right, 100% free gadgets and free gift vouchers and free anything - all from a company called freebiejeebies gadgets. This method of getting free gadgets isn’t a well kept secret, there are no secret societies set up to make huge profits selling the free items on ebay, and absolutely anybody can take part and claim their own freebies. The strange thing is that very few people actually seize this opportunity to save money and always have the latest gadgets in their hands because they don’t understand how it works. So here is my attempt to explain how anybody can get themselves a free iPad or LED television or anything else in just a few weeks. Step 1 - Get involved The first thing to do is obvious, you need to join freebiejeebies . All this takes is entering your details to set up a free account. Step 2 - Complete an off

Adsense is for Everyone

When Google's AdSense appeared, there were a lot of people who doubted Google's idea would be marketable and actually generate any profits. Yet as we stand here today it's probably the most well known pay per click venture in the world. Yes, all those nay sayers ended up eating their own words in the end. And that is because the folks at Google never go and do something without assessing whether or not it will be profitable, or exactly how profitable it is. But of course, as you might very well know, AdSense isn't just profitable for Google. It's also profitable for the people who advertise via AdWords and very profitable for publishers who use it to make earnings which are sometimes just enormous. So one must ask himself why this is such a good deal for everybody. And the question in itself is very justified because you hardly ever come across something that's profitable for everyone in the chain. So why would AdSense be any different. Well, AdSense is

Grow Your Business By Finding Your "Hidden" Organization

Have you ever wondered what enables some entrepreneurs to exponentially grow their businesses while others go flat, or worse? Their secret lies in their ability to find and lead what I call their "hidden" organization. You may think you don't have an organization, hidden or otherwise, especially if your business consists of a "gang of one" or there are only a few employees on staff. But the fact is that even the smallest businesses have an organization, and your success or failure is determined by your ability to find it and then lead it in a way that gives you more of the results you want. This may be a totally new concept to consider. It's easy to think of giant corporations as having organizations. These are the "internal stakeholders" consisting of employees, departments and committees on the payroll. However, large companies are realizing that independent consultants, suppliers, outsource providers, alliance partners, customers and other &qu

Emoticons for Twitter status or Facebook

How to use Emoticons in Twitter and Facebook Status? Its been quite a while that I used Orkut now a days. From Orkut I remember how people used to use some Ascii emotions in their profile, nicknames and later in their status message. So I just tried it over facebook and twitter and it worked there too. There are some special UTF compatible characters that can be used on a website just like a text. So now instead of putting a : ) emoticon you can use  ☺ Emoticons were first introduced by Instant Messengers like MSN and Yahoo and later they became so much popular that everyone had to use them. They are quite expressive sometimes when you are talking to something. I have a habit of using :p or emoticon and during the chat if sometimes I forget to put any of this the other person thinks I said something very seriously to him/her. lolz why they think I am kidding all the time. Ok not to waste more time, here is the list of some characters that you can use in your Facebook Status, Twitter
